Sunak belongs to a Punjabi Khatri family from Gujranwala. Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton, Hampshire, England to father Yashveer and mother Usha Sunak. He is the eldest of three siblings. His grandparents were born in Punjab province, India, and emigrated to the UK with their children from East Africa in the 1960s. He took oath on the Bhagavad Gita in the House of Commons in 2017. Rishi Sunak is a teetotaler. He was previously the Governor of the East London Science School. In August 2009, Sunak married Indian billionaire, Infosys founder, N. R. Married to Narayana Murthy's daughter Akshata Murthy. They met while studying at Stanford University and have two daughters.

Rishi did his schooling at Winchester College. He graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford with a first class in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He then received an MBA degree from Stanford University in 2006, receiving a scholarship under the Fulbright Program. While studying at Stanford, he met Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys founder and businessman NR Narayana Murthy.
