Holi celebrated at Sambhal’s Kartikeya Mahadev, a first in 46 years | Lucknow News



NEW DELHI: Devotees celebrated Holi at the Kartikeya Mahadev temple in Khaggu Sarai, Uttar Pradesh, for the first time in 46 years on Thursday, amid tight security. The temple, which was closed following riots in 1978, reopened last December and saw participation from various social and Hindu organizations.
The celebration took place under heavy police presence to ensure safety and order. The temple’s location near the Shahi Jama Masjid, a site of recent controversy, added significance to the event.

Additional Superintendent of Police Shreesh Chandra said, “Holi is being celebrated peacefully at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai. There is no need for anyone to worry. People are enjoying the festival in a secure environment.”
The nearby mosque had witnessed communal violence on November 24, 2024, during a court-ordered survey, resulting in four deaths.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad district president Anand Agrawal said, “After 46 years, we have had the fortune of playing Holi at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple. People from various social organisations have gathered here, celebrating with flowers and colours.”
Participant Priyanshu Jain praised the security arrangements, saying, “The police have done a great job in maintaining security, and everyone is immersed in the festive spirit.”
The temple, also known as Bhasma Shankar temple, was discovered during an anti-encroachment drive and reopened on December 13 last year. Officials found an idol of Lord Hanuman and a Shivling within the temple premises.
The successful celebration marked a significant moment for the local community, taking place under careful security measures to ensure a peaceful festivities.
