Canada Unveils Ambitious Immigration Plan 2024-2026: A Blueprint for the Future

Canada is preparing to release its Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026, which outlines the number of permanent residents to be invited in the next three years. The Immigration Levels Plan for 2024-2026 is scheduled to be unveiled on the specified date, no later than 4 PM Eastern Time, as indicated on the IRCC website.

The Immigration Levels Plan provides guidance on the allocation of permanent residents to Canada over the next three years, categorized under three immigration classes: economic, family, and humanitarian.

In accordance with Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), the federal government is required to disclose its annual immigration plan by November 1 in non-election years.

Canada is also taking steps to revamp its immigration system. This announcement comes just a day after Immigration Minister Marc Miller acknowledged deficiencies in the country’s immigration system and pledged to make improvements.

“IRCC has been engaging with stakeholders and the public throughout the year to help shape the future of a more robust immigration system,” stated the Canadian Immigration Minister.

Following Miller’s announcement, IRCC released a new strategic report to inform stakeholders of the department’s intentions.

IRCC is working to better align immigration with the labor market, modernize the application process, improve application processing standards, assist smaller communities in attracting newcomers, and promote French-speaking immigration throughout Canada.

In the report, IRCC has identified three key pillars and several actions to maintain Canada’s status as a preferred destination for newcomers:

  • Create a more welcoming experience for newcomers.
  • Align immigration with labor market needs.
  • Develop a comprehensive and coordinated growth plan.

In 2022, Canada set a record with 437,000 new immigrants admitted. The target for permanent resident admissions in 2023 is 465,000. The Canadian government is pursuing a new strategy to enhance the immigration system.

Earlier this year, to further target economic immigrants best suited to help Canada address labor force shortages, IRCC introduced category-based selection rounds of invitations for Express Entry candidates with work experience in high-demand sectors or the ability to promote the French language outside of Quebec.
