5-day-old Kerala toddler given 5 vaccines as an alternative of 1, admitted to ICU


A five-day-old new child child was wrongly administered 5 vaccines, as an alternative of 1, by a nurse at a Major Well being Centre (PHC) in Kerala’s Palakkad district. The kid has been admitted to the District Hospital after the vaccine overdose.

The incident passed off on Wednesday when the dad and mom took their baby to the PHC Pirayiri to get the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine for tuberculosis, native media reported.

Along with BCG, the kid was given the Pentavalent Vaccine (for 5 life-threatening ailments), the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV), Pneumococcal Vaccines (PCV), Oral Poliovirus Vaccines (OPV), and the Rotavirus vaccine.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The dad and mom, Nadirsha and Sibina, reached the PHC with their five-day-old toddler to get the BCG vaccine. They consulted the physician first after which proceeded to the vaccine sales space with a prescription. Based on their grievance, once they knowledgeable the responsibility nurse, Charulatha, that they’d come to obtain the BCG vaccine, the nurse responded rudely.

The BCG vaccine was administered through an injection into the left higher arm of the kid. Together with this, the nurse reportedly injected two extra vaccines into the thighs and in addition fed the child two oral vaccines.

Noticing this, the dad and mom went to the physician, and highlighted the difficulty.

NURSE SUSPENDED

Following the dad and mom’ grievance, authorities suspended the nurse who administered the vaccines. The District Medical Officer has initiated an investigation into the incident.

The kid, who bought a fever after the vaccination, is below statement in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the Palakkad District Hospital.
